Mather VIllage Phase 4 Groundbreaking

Breaking ground on progress: Mather Veterans Village Phase IV moves forward

On April 9, leaders from Mercy Housing California, Nation’s Finest, the City of Rancho Cordova, and Sacramento County gathered alongside Congressman Ami Bera to celebrate a major milestone: the groundbreaking of Mather Veterans Village Phase IV.

Located on the former Mather Air Force Base, the Village is the Sacramento region’s first dedicated affordable housing community for veterans experiencing homelessness. What was once a military training ground has been transformed into a place of healing, stability, and opportunity — honoring past service while addressing present‑day needs.

Previous phases have already delivered 160 permanent and transitional homes. Once all planned phases are complete, the broader Mather redevelopment is expected to support more than 5,000 veterans through housing, healthcare, and essential services.

Phase IV will add 70 new, all‑electric apartment homes for senior homeless veterans, further expanding a campus that has been thoughtfully built over more than 15 years. Designed in a C‑shaped layout to encourage natural light, wellness, and connection, the three‑story building will sit directly across from earlier phases of the Village, strengthening the sense of community and continuity that defines Mather.

This next chapter represents an important step forward in a long‑standing regional commitment to provide stable, affordable housing for veterans who have experienced homelessness and would not be possible without strong collaboration. Phase IV is supported by local, state, and federal funding, including significant Homekey+ investment from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, contributions from the City of Rancho Cordova and Sacramento County, and $1 million in federal funding secured by Congressman Bera. Nation’s Finest will continue to provide onsite supportive services, while Mercy Housing California will manage the property, with homes expected to open in August 2027.

Mather Veterans Village demonstrates that when communities come together with persistence and shared purpose, lasting change is possible for those who have served and deserve a place to call home.
