Nov 06Sister Patsy: A Lifetime of Service and Preserving Mercy Housing’s Legacy
The power of storytelling often lies in how history is kept alive for future generations. Sister Patsy, a Sister of Mercy—Burlingame, exemplifies this through her decades-long commitment to service and her dedication to preserving the stories and values of Mercy Housing. This journey began in the mid-1980s, alongside her dear friend and fellow Sister, Lillian, as they both followed unexpected paths of leadership and service.
The Early Days: Friendship and Foundations
In the tight-knit Burlingame community of the 1980s, the Sisters of Mercy shared everything about their lives and work. When the Omaha Sisters approached Sister Lillian about becoming the next President and CEO of Mercy Housing, she accepted, initially planning a short tenure. But as Sister Patsy notes, “Plans changed, as they sometimes do.”
Meanwhile, Sister Patsy pursued her own calling in social work, juggling a job as an assistant social worker at Francis of Assisi while pursuing her master’s degree. A shared passion for housing and community development reunited the two friends. When Sister Patsy suggested that Francis of Assisi join Mercy Housing, it became the first step in a transformative journey.
A Full Circle Moment
After completing her degree, Sister Patsy interned at Catholic Charities in Oakland but found herself yearning for the dynamic environment she experienced at Assisi. She reconnected with Sister Lillian, who encouraged her to take an active role at Mercy Housing California’s first affordable housing community, Mercy Family Plaza.
Her journey came full circle on December 1, 1990, when she officially began working as a service coordinator. Today, she serves as Resident Services Coordinator II at Visitacion Valley, bringing decades of experience and compassion to her role.
Preserving History and Leadership Foundations
Sister Patsy’s commitment extends beyond serving residents—she is deeply passionate about preserving Mercy Housing’s legacy. Concerned about losing the stories and contributions of the Sisters, she partnered with others to document this history. This effort led to her involvement with Leadership Foundations, a program that shares the organization’s heritage with new emerging leaders.
Part history lesson and part dialogue, the multi-day program connects past and present, ensuring that the values of Mercy Housing endure. For Sister Patsy, it’s also a way to build relationships with new team members. “I love meeting new Mercy Housing people. It’s always fun to connect with those whose names I’ve heard a million times.”
Sister Patsy’s work exemplifies the spirit of Mercy Housing—combining service with a commitment to preserving and sharing its rich history. As she helps shape the future of the organization, she ensures that its foundation remains deeply rooted in the values of the Sisters who started it all.
