We celebrated milestones for many of our amazing developments in San Francisco and the Peninsula in May. These milestones include a “topping out” celebration for two Sunnydale communities, breaking ground on a new affordable housing community for families as part of the Transbay Redevelopment Plan, updates on 555 Kelly in Half Moon Bay, and more.
Topping Out in Sunnydale
On May 8, we celebrated the “topping out” of Amani and Nia, the names of two communities in the Sunnydale neighborhood, meaning that all beams have been placed in both building frames. Mercy Housing California (MHC) is partnering with the City of San Francisco, Related California, San Francisco Housing Authority, and neighborhood residents to revitalize Sunnydale, San Francisco’s largest public housing site. The transformation plan includes 1-for-1 replacement housing for all current residents and new parks, streets, infrastructure, and a community center. Amani and Nia will provide 170 new affordable homes and around 24,000 square feet of community-serving commercial space.
Transbay 2 East Breaks Ground
In late May, we celebrated the groundbreaking of Transbay 2 East, a new San Francisco affordable community that will provide 184 apartment homes for families as well as neighborhood-serving commercial space as part of the Transbay Redevelopment Plan. Managed by San Francisco’s Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure, the plan to revitalize this transit-accessible neighborhood includes a total of 1,400 new affordable homes. Next door, our friends at local nonprofit Chinatown Community Development Corporation broke ground on Transbay 2 West, providing 151 apartment homes for seniors.
555 Kelly in Half Moon Bay
On May 14, we received Planning Commission approvals for 555 Kelly in Half Moon Bay. In partnership with local community organization Ayundando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS), MHC is building 40 affordable homes for senior farmworkers and an ALAS Farmworker Resource Center. Our approvals have now been appealed, so MHC and ALAS will present the development to the Half Moon Bay City Council on June 26. Recent events have shed new light on the importance of affordable housing for the people who grow California’s food and their families. Many farmworkers, who are longtime residents of the area, are living in substandard conditions without services. MHC and ALAS, with help from farmworkers and other community members, are working to convey the urgency of the work to build 555 Kelly.
1687 Market
Lastly, on May 10, we announced our plans for 1687 Market, an affordable community in downtown San Francisco that will serve artists and their families. Local nonprofit Artist Hub on Market received a $100 million contribution to build this development and then selected MHC as their real estate partner. San Francisco wouldn’t be a vibrant city without our creative community, and 1687 Market will be the first affordable housing community for artists ever built within the city limits.
