Nov 21Happy 10th Anniversary Aromor!
Maggie once lived in a custom-built home while enjoying the good life in the Colorado foothills. Due to a series of unforeseen circumstances, however, she found herself on the brink of being homeless. Mercy Housing was able to offer her a stable, affordable home in the historic Aromor Apartments. Ten years later, both Maggie and the Aromor are celebrating a decade of community engagement and support.
Mercy Housing friends, supporters, and residents joined for an intimate gathering to celebrate Aromor Apartment’s 10th Anniversary on Thursday, October 24. The Aromor has a long history in Denver that dates back to 1927. Originally built as an extended-stay hotel for Colorado legislators, it now serves as an affordable housing option for low-income individuals who are at risk of becoming homeless or chronically homeless.
Mercy Housing rehabilitated the property in 2009 through the generous $1.5 million donation from the Schaden Family Foundation through America’s Road Home.
The evening program included inspiring words from Mercy Housing’s Dee Walsh (Chief Officer of Strategic Development) and Jennifer Thibault (VP of Resident Services). Other speakers included Alison George (Director, Colorado Department of Local Affairs), Patrick Coyle (former Deputy Director, Colorado Department of Local Affairs), Jonathan Griffiths (Managing Principal, National Real Estate Practice at EPIC Insurance Brokers), Maggie (Aromor resident and artist), and the Honorable John Hickenlooper (former Denver Mayor and Colorado Governor).
Also celebrated was the diverse talents of Aromor residents with a resident art show. Acrylic on canvas artwork was on display to highlight the art therapy class, known as Artists Among Us. Mercy Housing uses art therapy to help victims of trauma cope and heal while providing an outlet for residents to express their feelings that may be hard to verbalize. Many special thanks to EPIC Insurance who has helped support the success of this program.
Wishing the Aromor and its residents continued success in the future!
