Apr 22Hope for the Future — Earth Day
Today is Earth Day and Mercy Housing is passionate about preserving the natural resources that are precious to so many communities. In our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle—partnerships are our greatest ally. Green Hope is Mercy Housing’s environmental sustainability program spearheading these efforts. Here are a few highlights of what we’ve been doing to support residents and the earth:
- Caitlin Rood, Mercy Housing’s National Environmental Sustainability Director, has been honored by Environment + Energy Leader 100 with an award of achievement in making significant strides in driving the industry. Coveted spots on the E+E 100 list are handed to the VPs, directors, managers and engineers who are driving their companies – and the environment, sustainability and energy management industry itself – forward.
- Mercy Housing and TNDC were recognized as Better Buildings Challenge leaders by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Mercy Housing discussed its preserving of affordable housing while reducing utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Property 205 Jones, winner of the 2018 National Apartment Association Return on Energy Retrofit Award, was highlighted and toured during the event.
- Marlton Manor, a Mercy Housing California property has saved around $35,000 on utility bills with 23% savings on energy use and 6% savings on water use. This is just one example of a Mercy Housing property that’s been making big savings.
- Our partner, Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future (SAHF), share our passion for the environment, and we had the opportunity to host them for an annual energy peer group meeting where we toured The Alliance Center and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Colorado.
Additionally, Mercy Housing hosted a coloring contest across our properties. Participants ranged from seniors to elementary students. This was a great opportunity to facilitate a conversation around residents’ understanding and relationship with the environment.
