PROJECT FOOD: TAKING A BITE OUT OF FOOD LITERACY

PF Logo BlackBetween field trips and field days, the Leataata Floyd Student and Family Community Center in Sacramento is always buzzing with activity. The Center has turned into a hub for the families in Sacramento’s Marina Vista and Alder Grove communities offering resources for parents and youth including bike repairs, art workshops, self-empowerment camps, and most recently food literacy.

Project Food is a food literacy project encouraging food knowledge and healthy choices among young people—inviting students to participate in health and wellness education in a way that’s fun, approachable, and practical. Recognizing poor dietary habits during adolescence adversely affect several health and wellness indicators including day-to-day functioning, proper growth, and development, Mercy Housing invited students from the local elementary school and teens from Marina Vista and Alder Grove communities as well as Mercy Housing’s Lance Apartments and Kennedy Estates to participate in the Project Food initiative.

On April 19th, the Project Food Showcase at the Tskapoulous Library in downtown Sacramento will feature demonstrations, exhibits, and tastings—inviting the community to share in their findings and celebrate healthy habits.
