The Carlton Apartments and Millworks Family Housing Win 2024 Edson Awards

There was reason to celebrate recently as two Mercy Housing affordable housing communities, the Carlton Apartments in Chicago and Millworks Family Housing in Washington State received Edson awards. The Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Awards (Edson Awards), are presented to 10 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit developments across eight states that strengthen communities, improve opportunities for residents, and support economies across the country.

In recognition of the team’s vital work in preserving and enhancing 80 supportive apartment homes, The Carlton Apartments, located in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood received an Edson Award in the HUD Preservation category. Recognized in the National Register of Historic Places, the building now features modern amenities, including WIFI and air conditioning, new furnishings, and new/expanded community spaces. These updates ensure that residents continue to have access to stable, inclusive affordable housing and supportive services.

Millworks Family Housing is one of the country’s most sustainable affordable housing communities.

Located in the Port of Bellingham’s waterfront redevelopment district, Millworks Family Housing won an Edson Award for Small Metropolitan Area. Millworks provides 83 energy-efficient apartment homes, with 15  reserved for formerly homeless households. This highly sustainable community uses the new Washington State Department of Ecology Healthy Housing cleanup program to clean up contaminated sites for affordable housing. Millworks marks the first affordable housing community in Whatcom County and the second completed in the state to use this approach.
