2024 was another banner year for Mercy Housing Northwest’s real estate development. With more than 1,400 homes in the development pipeline, brand-new affordable communities are sprouting up in Bellingham, Seattle, Tacoma, Vancouver, and the Portland Metro area. With this in mind, we wanted to share some key highlights from another stellar year for our development team.
IDD Housing Panel Discussion
In June, alongside our partners at The Arc of King County, we held a special panel discussion and conversation about the dire housing needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Arc of King County and Mercy Housing Northwest are partnering on Mercy Angle Lake Family Housing in SeaTac.
When this brand-new community opens this year, it will provide 130 affordable, energy-efficient apartment homes, nearly half of which will be two- and three-bedrooms. Twenty-six of those apartment homes will be set aside for persons with IDD and their families. This special panel discussion allowed community members and service providers to learn more about the partnership and our unique approach to this work.
Mercy Greenbrae Grand Opening
In July, Mercy Housing Northwest, in partnership with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM), celebrated the grand opening of Mercy Housing’s first affordable housing community in Oregon.
Mercy Greenbrae features 100 apartment homes, onsite property management/resident services, a community room, a technology center, outdoor recreation space, and a playground. It is also one of the country’s most energy-efficient affordable housing communities. With the support of SNJM, the community is pursuing Passive House USA certification, a rigorous performance-based energy efficiency certification. The building is expected to use 40% less electricity than a conventional design and will not consume fossil fuels.
Millworks Grand Opening
In August, Mercy Housing Northwest, in partnership with Whatcom Community Foundation, celebrated the grand opening of Mercy Millworks Family Housing on the waterfront near the Port of Bellingham.
Mercy Millworks features 83 new, affordable, energy-efficient homes. Half of the homes are two—and three-bedroom units, meeting a critical need for more affordable family housing in Whatcom County. The community also features offices for onsite property management and resident services staff, a community room with a kitchen, outdoor recreation space including a playground, and a six-classroom YMCA early learning center.
