Nov 06Partnering for Impact: Tackling Food Insecurity with the Little Company of Mary Sisters
Food insecurity is a persistent challenge for many families, and Mercy Housing is committed to addressing this critical issue head-on. Food pantries continue to be among our most utilized services, reflecting the essential role they play in supporting our residents. In 2023 alone, the resident services programming team provided food assistance to 11,281 households, with residents accessing food services an astonishing 159,174 times across all Mercy Housing regions.
Additionally, enrollment in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) among Mercy Housing residents remains higher than the general population, further highlighting the acute need for food assistance. These numbers are a stark reminder of the challenges our residents face and the importance of programs designed to provide stability and nourishment.
In response to this pressing need, Mercy Housing is proud to announce a transformative new partnership with the Little Company of Mary Sisters, anchored by a generous $450,000 donation. This contribution will directly support efforts to combat food insecurity across all Mercy Housing regions, with a particular focus on our Lakefront properties near the Sisters’ home base in Illinois.
A portion of this funding will also support the Mercy Housing National Endowment, launched in 2022, ensuring long-term sustainability for food assistance and other critical resident services. Over the next three years, this donation will help us expand access to food resources and strengthen our commitment to building healthier, thriving communities.
We are profoundly grateful to the Little Company of Mary Sisters for their unwavering dedication to this mission. Their support underscores the deep connection between Mercy Housing and faith communities committed to justice and service. Together, we are making meaningful strides toward alleviating food insecurity and providing residents with the resources they need to succeed.
