Celebrating the Dedication of Heritage Gardens in Long Beach

The new affordable housing community is home to low-income seniors and senior veterans who have experienced homelessness

On September 18, representatives from Mercy Housing California joined city officials and community partners in celebration of Heritage Gardens, a brand-new affordable housing community for low-income seniors and senior veterans who have experienced homelessness in Long Beach, California.

Located at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and designed by Long Beach-based architect Studio One Eleven, Heritage Gardens features 67 affordable apartments, surrounded by a large, landscaped courtyard, recreation area, and onsite property management. There is also an indoor lounge and approximately 3,500 sq. ft. of ground-floor community space for residents. In addition, onsite resident services programming is available for all residents.

“We are proud to be part of the overall team providing much-needed affordable housing for seniors and veterans,” said Mercy Housing California Vice President of Real Estate Development, Ed Holder. “With Heritage Place, we are not only creating a secure and dignified living environment but also honoring the sacrifices and contributions of those who have served our country and our communities. This is a crucial step toward ensuring that all individuals, regardless of age or background, have access to safe, affordable housing.”

The building’s exterior design is highlighted by public art designed by local artists Erica James and Erik “Roshi” Vincent, which reflects the rich musical history of this central Long Beach neighborhood. The iconic VIP Records, which was located across the street, supported the development of genre-defining artists like Snoop, Warren G, and Nate Dogg.

Central to public transit, grocery stores, libraries, and public parks, Heritage Gardens is managed by Mercy Housing Management Group (MHMG).

Heritage Gardens was possible thanks to the generous support of the City of Long Beach, Bank of America, the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Development Authority, and the California Department of Housing and Community Development.
