We were excited to host our first in-person fundraising gala since 2019, “Home is Just the Beginning,” on May 7 at the Fairmont San Francisco. Thanks to your generosity, we raised over $500,000 for crucial resident services at Mercy Housing California (MHC) communities, where residents can heal, grow, and reach their full potential.
Home is Just The Beginning
Attendees got a sneak peek of The Hub, a new community center bridging San Francisco’s Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods that will open this fall. MHC partnered with Related California, the City of San Francisco, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, and other key partners to complete a $45 capital campaign, helping to realize the dreams of generations of Sunnydale residents. The Hub will start offering extensive programming for youth and families later this year, largely thanks to the many generous capital campaign donors who were celebrated at the gala.

Meet Eric, Katrina & Anthony, and Timothy
In a special video presentation, attendees met Eric, a young resident pursuing his goal of becoming a nurse; Katrina and Anthony, who rose above tough circumstances to provide a nurturing home life for their young daughters; and Timothy, who was homeless and used a wheelchair for years before moving into an MHC community, where he improved his health, and embarked on a new career path.
The Spirit of Mercy Award
The “Spirit of Mercy” Award was presented to two cherished partners. Late MHC Board Member Ford Fish was instrumental in raising millions of dollars for Sunnydale residents and supporting the explosive growth of the organization’s real estate activity during his time on the board of directors. Joined by his children and friends, Ford’s wife, Leticia, graciously accepted a posthumous Spirit of Mercy Award on his behalf and spoke to the power of philanthropy to transform communities.
State Senator Scott Wiener also accepted a Spirit of Mercy Award for his high-impact policy work to make affordable housing more abundant and accessible. The Senator then delivered a rousing keynote address. “Housing is basic to life,” said Senator Wiener. “We want a state where housing is as abundant as air is – where people don’t have to worry about whether they can afford to stay here, where they don’t have to worry about raising a child in the community where they grew up… Thank you to Mercy Housing for working with us on many efforts to make building new homes in California easier.”
