Happy Nelson Mandela Day

Today is Nelson Mandela Day! Mercy Housing keeps his legacy in our thoughts as the world honors his incredible life which made the world a better place. He was a champion of equal rights and advocate for fair, just treatment of all people. Mandela chose a message of mercy at a time when South Africa was teetering on the brink of civil war. He was the first democratically elected president of South Africa, and on this day, would have turned 100.

His career is a testament to how compassion can lead the way to positive change. To learn more, we recommend The Prison Letters of Mandela. The book was just released this month and is a collection of letters written during his 27 years in prison. Though he’s famed for being fearless in the face of adversity, this book reveals the vulnerable side of Mandela as he struggled with being separated from his family.

Family relationships are an irreplaceable building block of community, and Mercy Housing continues to support this notion with stable and affordable housing for low-income families in need.
