Go Red for Heart Health

Did you know that heart disease is the #1 killer among women? At our Mercy Housing Northwest communities, 63% of the residents we serve are women. Heart disease also disproportionately affects people of color, a very critical population that we serve.

In honor of Heart Health month in February, many of our residents across Washington state celebrated ‘Go Red Day’ with various fun and educational activities to learn about what it takes to keep your heart healthy.

Up in Everett, our residents enjoyed healthy snacks and the kids helped make pizza dough from scratch, topped with a rainbow of vegetables. MHNW partnered with University of Washington Bothell, who brought out four nurses to teach the residents about blood pressure, pulse rates, and heart healthy foods.

Over in Kent, our residents celebrated Heart Health month with a healthy potluck, and kicked off a 9-week ‘Women Take Heart’ curriculum, which covers different topics related to heart health. Residents learned about the symptoms of having a heart attack during the first class.

Down in Tacoma, our residents learned about healthy foods, physical activity and blood pressure checks. The residents did chair exercises together and enjoyed a healthy meal. Check out some photos of our lovely residents all decked out in red!
