On January 29th, Sr. Patricia McDermott, RSM, a Mercy Housing Board Member, was invited to testify on poverty issues before the Senate Democratic Outreach Committee.

Sr. Pat is the President of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and has served on Mercy Housing’s National Board of Trustees in several different roles since 1999.

Sr. Pat testified that the growing disparity between the rich and poor is the grave moral issue of the times.  She urged Congress to raise the minimum wage,  extend unemployment benefits and work toward comprehensive immigration reform.

As part of the Obama Administration’s renewed focus on income inequality, outlined in the State of the Union speech, they are giving a national platform to longtime antipoverty advocates like Sr. Pat.

We congratulate Sr. Pat for making the most of this opportunity and for being a voice for the economically poor. Mercy Housing will continue to encourage the Administration’s focus on addressing poverty issues in the United States.
