Green Retrofits Cuts Residents’ Bills

At a time when expenses seem to be rising everywhere, some Mercy Housing Northwest residents are seeing significant savings on their utility bills. On average, 7 MHNW properties saved an amazing $62,000 per year as a result of the Green Retrofit Program. Residents are now saving:

  • 24% in common space electricity consumption
  • 18% in total water use and
  • 10% on their electric consumption

In 2009, HUD announced a Green Retrofit Program (GRP) for Multifamily Housing funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  In 2010, Mercy Housing Northwest used this funding for 7 properties to implement energy and water efficiency and indoor air quality upgrades. We have tracked building energy and water use before and after the retrofit program, and were pleased to see big savings. Properties in Adams, Grant, Skagit, Skamania, Whatcom, and Yakima Counties benefitted from this renovation.
